Gardeners/Landscapers Wanted

See all wishes from Humane Society of Sedona

Description

Get your hands dirty and help us help more pets. When the landscape around our shelter looks neat and trim, people are more likely to feel comfortable stopping by to see our adoptable pets. When it's overgrown, people are hesitant to stop. But we don't want to spend donation money on tree trimming and weed pulling, so we're looking for a volunteer or group of volunteers to lend a hand.

SedonaKind's primary mission is to spread kindness locally. We are asking for service from the readers of the Wish List by donating an act of kindness somewhere in the community. Last week we requested one kind act the day the readers saw the wish in the Wish List. This week we're suggesting one act of kindness a day (minimum) for a week. Wouldn't it be great if all of you donated an act of kindness for every day of the week? Let's try it!

Scientific Calculators

See all wishes from Bwindi Community Program

nopic

Description

The right tools make a difference! We try to provision our students for the transition to secondary school. It is expensive for rural Ugandan students to go to the next level of education. Scientific calculators only cost $18 each but that is often more than a sponsor can provide when faced with all the mandatory items a student requires to move to secondary. Please help by providing a donation to the Calculator Fund at BwindiCommunityProgram.org or by writing a check to Bwindi Community Program and mailing it to 20 Soldiers Trail, Sedona AZ 86336. It is the little things that make the difference between success and a mediocre attempt. These students deserve all the ammunition we can provide!

Scientific Calculators

See all wishes from Bwindi Community Program

nopic

Description

Students in secondary school in Uganda benefit from being able to use scientific calculators. The transition from primary school requires a lot of provisioning of these students; supplies mandated by the school and personal items for the year of boarding. Bwindi Community Program asks the sponsors to provide a great deal to make this transition comfortable for our rural students. Scientific calculators are not mandatory so are not on the list. But scientific calculators for each student can make a difference in performance. BCP wants to make certain that all the sponsored students have the tools to do well. The calculators only cost $18 each. So much good will come out of so little! Please help the students achieve their goals by having the best tools.

Can you make planter dollies for school container garden?

See all wishes from Gardens for Humanity

Description

Is there a person you know with the tools and know-how who can fabricate some dollies for containers for a garden at Big Park Elementary School?

The dollies are made with 5 pieces of 2 x 4 16" long. They are screwed together with deck screws and have a metal brace in the corners. They are finished off with rotating coaster wheels. See the accompanying photo. We could use about a dozen of them in total. A great project for a men's group or service club.

Students will use the dollies to hold their planting tubs of 10-15 gallon size which they will need to be able to move.

Description

We are looking for empty tubs that trees or shrubs come in to use for classroom container gardening. These would be the large, approximately 10-15 gallon size.

We also need donations of square-foot garden soil mix and some peat moss to fill the containers.

Kindness Charm Story

A group of women in Sedona have been focused on a special approach to kindness for over four years. The women have been making "Kindness" charms out of broken, recycled and surplus donated jewelry and dispersing them, not only around Sedona, but across the nation and world wide.

Each Charm had a tag that says "Take me home and spread kindness". To date the women have distributed over 4,000 charms to every state in the US and over three dozen countries, in the hope that they are found by someone that needs to be reminded that they are loved.
Donations can be dropped off at Remax at the Safeway Plaza or

CHARMING DEN

When the Kindness Charmers outgrew their current space we sent out a plea for help. We didn’t want to turn away Charmers and we also needed space to leave our donated materials. Lori Reinhold, Manager of Alma de Sedona, stepped up without hesitation to provide us with a new “Den”. It’s the perfect location with seating for 20+, and lush views out every window. Lori sealed the deal baking us an awesome blueberry cake! After seeing the unique guest rooms, pool, gardens and pond…we can’t wait to return next month; and we now know where to suggest out-of-towners stay. Remember the rock ‘n roll band KISS? Well, we’re SO MUCH COOLER than they are!!!! Why, you ask? The Kindness in School’s (KIS) mission is to acknowledge students’ kindness to create a more compassionate and considerate environment in the school, classroom and on the playground. This promotes Value of Self, Acceptance and Friendship. Our goals are to help students understand what kindness is and to recognize, encourage and acknowledge ‘acts of kindness’ in everyday life. Finally, the objective is to encourage and support teachers and staff in recognizing and promoting ‘acts of kindness’ in their schools.

WOW! HEAVY words and AMBITIOUS goals! SO, why all the excitement and why is this SO COOL?! BECAUSE if YOU get involved at the ground floor as we go into the elementary grades, this is where the seeds germinate. BUT, you all know that old time honored adage “It takes a village…”! Well, we need that village and we need it NOW! We don’t expect you to go solo into a classroom or spend hours of slave labor but would you be willing to check us out and see if you could become part of KIS to do something. Children promoting kindness are our hope for the future and if that’s not WAY COOLER than KISS…

Volunteer Jobs:

Meet and Greeter: We are a busy facility and need a helper to answer questions, check membership with electronics drop-off, and help customers find things we offer to the public, such as bubble wrap, packing peanuts, and egg cartons. Tuesday and Thursday mornings we need someone to assist customers to dispose of their documents. **You will learn a LOT about recycling and meet some fabulous people in the process!

Cleaning & Organizer: There always something to sweep up, put away, reorganize, dust, or clean, and litter to pick up off our street. ** You can learn a lot about the business side of recycling, what goes where and why.

Processor: Styrofoam processing and getting batteries ready for shipping require a lot of attention. If you have a good eye for detail and like the satisfaction of seeing how much material you help keep from the landfill this is for you. ** This can look cool on your resume- “I helped process x pounds of material, and we never had to pay a fine for my batteries being incorrectly packed.”

Line Sorter: Like to get in the zone? Help us sort all the mixed plastics that come to the facility. ** You will learn about the enormous variety of products on the market and what is recyclable and what isn’t.

Educator Assistant: If you’re creative and have teaching skills, we can use your ideas for classroom activities. Help us design lessons and make hands-on activities. Also help with education events and outreach tables. ** Great experience in the field of education and very rewarding!

Crafter: Plan recycled crafts and organize a monthly class. ** You get to keep your creations and be inspired by your students.

Adopt a Business: Small businesses sometimes don't have the resources to recycle. Volunteer to pick up their materials and take them to a drop-off site. ** You can assist in a waste audit and help a business get to near zero waste!

Fundraiser: If you have ideas on how to bring in funding, we need you. **Everlasting good karma.

Or create your own volunteer day by combining different jobs!

**What’s in it for you.

Textbooks and Science Lab Workbooks

See all wishes from Bwindi Community Program

Description

Bwindi Community Program (BCP) has learned about the need for Textbooks and Science Lab Workbooks at the rural Uganda secondary school where our older sponsored students study. There are never enough textbooks to allow each student to have one in their possession for a term. They have to be one of the lucky students to find a book in the library when they need it.

Science courses should be accompanied by individual lab workbooks. They allow the student to keep a personal record of the lesson in the lab. It is an invaluable tool in learning some challenging subjects. BCP would like your help to provide these for the students who cannot afford them.

Enhance the education of these students by writing a check to Bwindi Community Program for $15 each textbook or workbook. You may also donate online by visiting our website BwindiCommunityProgram.org. There is hope for a future for these children through education.

Back to School Boost!

See all wishes from Verde Valley Sanctuary

Description

Back To School Items!! 50% of our shelter residents and Outreach client's are children --often traumatized and now without belongings. They need backpacks, paper, pens, clothing, all types of school supplies. Even your cash donation sent to VVS can be marked "children's school supplies' and we will carefully apply the money to the children - we will take them to Walmart with their mother! Children are our priority. It's critical that we give them the boost they deserve. Domestic violence really sets a child back --often effecting the rest of their life. Help us break the cycle.

Solar Lamps to light up Evening Study Time

See all wishes from Bwindi Community Program

Description

The secondary students go home on break to a very rural village three times per year. They must perform family chores during the day and want to study in the evening. It is impossible in an environment where there is no electric service and only commercial lodges can afford to run a generator. The situation creates lost time and frustration for the hard-working students who return to school for the new term in need of help to regain their proficiency. A simple solar powered lamp would light up their evening and allow that precious study time while they are away from school. A good quality lamp can be purchased for $17 per student. The thirty eight students in secondary school will cheer your kindness.

Grocery bills are going UP!

See all wishes from SedonaKind

nopic

Description

Our grocery bills seem to get higher every week! Living in Sedona we pay a bit more for the stores to transport all their merchandise up to the North Country. I was in line at Bashe's the other day and there was a woman with a $10 gift card in front of me. I could see her fumbling in her purse to come up with the additional $3 to cover her meager grocery bill. Since my wallet was already in my hand , I pulled out a $5 bill and said I would like to help. She was extremely grateful and a bit embarrassed but she clearly needed assistance.

There is a minimal income population in Sedona. We have our share of working poor who have trouble feeding their families. Donating to the Sedona Community Food Bank is one way to help. You may also concider purchasing a $10 food card at the grocery store to donate to the Sedona Area Homeless Alliance. Please drop off at 435 Coffee Pot Dr. or call Laurie Moore, 928-254-8912

Political Kindness

See all wishes from SedonaKind

nopic

Description

Election season is now in full swing. The mud slinging begins in earnest! And not just by the candidates. Harsh political rhetoric is everywhere - Facebook, Instagram, Twitter - and so on. It seems no one can express a civil response to an opposing opinion. Maybe this is why Washington is broken! SedonaKind would love to see people open their minds before they open their "mouths," and speak kindly to others, even when they disagree - maybe especially when they disagree. Think kind thoughts, everyone, before you speak or post. Let's work together!

Mash Notes

See all wishes from SedonaKind

Description

In the 1890s, there was a lovely practice of sending a "mash note," which is defined as "a note that expresses love or affection for the person who receives it. In those days, the note would have been written on perfumed paper and probably hand-delivered. Today, we have many options: snail mail, email, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and so many more. But the intent may be the same. How wonderful to receive such a nice note! Better yet, how great it is to send one! Try it today - and be SedonaKind.

Description

Flu and cold season has arrived, with illness spreading like wildfire. We wash our hands and cover our sneezes to avoid passing it on to others. But one contagious thing we should spread around is kindness! Nobody gets mad at you for sharing that, it's fun to imagine who it will affect next, and the recipient is very likely to pass it on. So smile at a stranger, pay it forward in line at the drive through, or drop a beloved book at the library to benefit their book sale. A cold could never feel this good!

Matching Donation Challenge

Description

Red Rose rolls out new spay-neuter program

Red Rose Inspiration For Animals proudly announces its newest program called Rosey's Party, which is focused on free canine spay and neuter -- any breed, any size and any need to help make a difference in the over pet population of canines throughout the Verde Valley.

Red Rose has continued to support homeless animals with their free spay/neuter services and support pet owners who can't afford low cost spay/neuter services at shelters and clinics.

Rosey's Party expands upon their Pitty-Party efforts, which focuses primarily on the spay/neuter of pit bulls and pit-mixes because pit bulls are one of the most common breeds in many shelters across the US to be euthanized and are even outlawed in some states.

Red Rose still offers no-cost spay/neuter for felines through their General Spay and Neuter Program and TNR (Trap/Neuter Return) Program.

According to Red Rose “animals left to reproduce often times become abandoned, abused, neglected or injured. It's a horrible existence for them and it doesn't have to be this way as we can all help to promote and educate pet owners as to why spay and neuter is so important.”

Redrock Precision Motors, a local supporter of the community offered to help Red Rose Inspiration, fund Rosey's Party by offering a donation challenge. They will match all donations dollar-for-dollar for the first $1000 raised through the end of August.

To help donate to Rosey’s Party, checks can be made payable to Red Rose Inspiration For Animals, P.O Box 74, Sedona, AZ 86339.

To make an appointment for free spay/neuter through Rosey’s Party call 928-282-5278 or email info@redroseinspiration.org

Seeking Good Sized Planters

Hi Sedona Wish List Followers!

Running River School is currently moving the classrooms to a new location. We are re-purposing most everything we already own, but have come up with one extra need. We are hoping to find some good sized planters to plant flowers and such, to add some beauty to the children's new environment. If you have any decent sized pots (not too small) in good condition that may need to be re-homed we will pick them up. We may be able to make a small monetary contribution, if that kind of exchange is important for you. Please contact Lupita at 928-362-2659 if you have anything to offer. Many thanks to you, from Running River School!

Volunteers for Retail Thrift

Description

Red Rose Inspiration For Animals works in animal rescue throughout the Verde Valley. We connect animals and people. We are unique in the fact that we are not your typical animal rescue organization. As we do not have a facility to take in animals and we generally don't foster animals. We do however network with others who can take in animals and foster.

We provide programs for animal rescue and give back in the form of free spay and neuter as we have for 6 years. In the past 2 months we have spayed and neutered over 100 animals.

We provide financial assistance to those who can not afford to take their animal to a vet in an emergency situation, we assist folks who are so dedicated to their animal and find themselves homeless through a transitional home offering a safe place to stay. We provide service dogs to people in need. We trap, spay/neuter and return feral cats to make a difference in the over pet population and much more.

We are looking for dynamic volunteers in a variety of capacities. We most especially need for our retail shop Red Rose Thriftique located in the Village of Oak Creek. Please help us to continue making a difference in the community in which we live and helping the animals throughout the Verde Valley. Together we can make a difference. Thanks for considering volunteering or donating to Red Rose..

Donation of Items for Fundraiser Garage Sale

See all wishes from Running River School

Description

Hello my fellow Sedonans!

Running River School is still seeking donations of typical garage sale items in good condition through the end of May. Here's the best part, WE PICK UP! You don't even have to leave home to get it to us! We can take furniture too.

We do realize that most people have a favorite thrift shop they support, but we are hoping some of you are open to spreading the love around, just for a short time. We are collecting for only one more month, so your favorite shop/organization can still be supported the rest of the year!

Thank you for considering us! Last year, with the help of the community, we were able to raise around $7000, which went directly to overhead such as rent, utilities and teacher salaries. It may not seem like much to some, but it makes all the difference to us!

Sending you gratitude for all you do for your community. All organizations on this site could not operate without your generosity!
