Grocery bills are going UP!

See all wishes from SedonaKind

nopic

Description

Our grocery bills seem to get higher every week! Living in Sedona we pay a bit more for the stores to transport all their merchandise up to the North Country. I was in line at Bashe's the other day and there was a woman with a $10 gift card in front of me. I could see her fumbling in her purse to come up with the additional $3 to cover her meager grocery bill. Since my wallet was already in my hand , I pulled out a $5 bill and said I would like to help. She was extremely grateful and a bit embarrassed but she clearly needed assistance.

There is a minimal income population in Sedona. We have our share of working poor who have trouble feeding their families. Donating to the Sedona Community Food Bank is one way to help. You may also concider purchasing a $10 food card at the grocery store to donate to the Sedona Area Homeless Alliance. Please drop off at 435 Coffee Pot Dr. or call Laurie Moore, 928-254-8912

Political Kindness

See all wishes from SedonaKind

nopic

Description

Election season is now in full swing. The mud slinging begins in earnest! And not just by the candidates. Harsh political rhetoric is everywhere - Facebook, Instagram, Twitter - and so on. It seems no one can express a civil response to an opposing opinion. Maybe this is why Washington is broken! SedonaKind would love to see people open their minds before they open their "mouths," and speak kindly to others, even when they disagree - maybe especially when they disagree. Think kind thoughts, everyone, before you speak or post. Let's work together!

Mash Notes

See all wishes from SedonaKind

Description

In the 1890s, there was a lovely practice of sending a "mash note," which is defined as "a note that expresses love or affection for the person who receives it. In those days, the note would have been written on perfumed paper and probably hand-delivered. Today, we have many options: snail mail, email, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and so many more. But the intent may be the same. How wonderful to receive such a nice note! Better yet, how great it is to send one! Try it today - and be SedonaKind.

Description

Flu and cold season has arrived, with illness spreading like wildfire. We wash our hands and cover our sneezes to avoid passing it on to others. But one contagious thing we should spread around is kindness! Nobody gets mad at you for sharing that, it's fun to imagine who it will affect next, and the recipient is very likely to pass it on. So smile at a stranger, pay it forward in line at the drive through, or drop a beloved book at the library to benefit their book sale. A cold could never feel this good!

Matching Donation Challenge

Description

Red Rose rolls out new spay-neuter program

Red Rose Inspiration For Animals proudly announces its newest program called Rosey's Party, which is focused on free canine spay and neuter -- any breed, any size and any need to help make a difference in the over pet population of canines throughout the Verde Valley.

Red Rose has continued to support homeless animals with their free spay/neuter services and support pet owners who can't afford low cost spay/neuter services at shelters and clinics.

Rosey's Party expands upon their Pitty-Party efforts, which focuses primarily on the spay/neuter of pit bulls and pit-mixes because pit bulls are one of the most common breeds in many shelters across the US to be euthanized and are even outlawed in some states.

Red Rose still offers no-cost spay/neuter for felines through their General Spay and Neuter Program and TNR (Trap/Neuter Return) Program.

According to Red Rose “animals left to reproduce often times become abandoned, abused, neglected or injured. It's a horrible existence for them and it doesn't have to be this way as we can all help to promote and educate pet owners as to why spay and neuter is so important.”

Redrock Precision Motors, a local supporter of the community offered to help Red Rose Inspiration, fund Rosey's Party by offering a donation challenge. They will match all donations dollar-for-dollar for the first $1000 raised through the end of August.

To help donate to Rosey’s Party, checks can be made payable to Red Rose Inspiration For Animals, P.O Box 74, Sedona, AZ 86339.

To make an appointment for free spay/neuter through Rosey’s Party call 928-282-5278 or email info@redroseinspiration.org

Seeking Good Sized Planters

See all wishes from Running River School

Description

Hi Sedona Wish List Followers!

Running River School is currently moving the classrooms to a new location. We are re-purposing most everything we already own, but have come up with one extra need. We are hoping to find some good sized planters to plant flowers and such, to add some beauty to the children's new environment. If you have any decent sized pots (not too small) in good condition that may need to be re-homed we will pick them up. We may be able to make a small monetary contribution, if that kind of exchange is important for you. Please contact Lupita at 928-362-2659 if you have anything to offer. Many thanks to you, from Running River School!

Volunteers for Retail Thrift

Description

Red Rose Inspiration For Animals works in animal rescue throughout the Verde Valley. We connect animals and people. We are unique in the fact that we are not your typical animal rescue organization. As we do not have a facility to take in animals and we generally don't foster animals. We do however network with others who can take in animals and foster.

We provide programs for animal rescue and give back in the form of free spay and neuter as we have for 6 years. In the past 2 months we have spayed and neutered over 100 animals.

We provide financial assistance to those who can not afford to take their animal to a vet in an emergency situation, we assist folks who are so dedicated to their animal and find themselves homeless through a transitional home offering a safe place to stay. We provide service dogs to people in need. We trap, spay/neuter and return feral cats to make a difference in the over pet population and much more.

We are looking for dynamic volunteers in a variety of capacities. We most especially need for our retail shop Red Rose Thriftique located in the Village of Oak Creek. Please help us to continue making a difference in the community in which we live and helping the animals throughout the Verde Valley. Together we can make a difference. Thanks for considering volunteering or donating to Red Rose..

Donation of Items for Fundraiser Garage Sale

Description

Hello my fellow Sedonans!

Running River School is still seeking donations of typical garage sale items in good condition through the end of May. Here's the best part, WE PICK UP! You don't even have to leave home to get it to us! We can take furniture too.

We do realize that most people have a favorite thrift shop they support, but we are hoping some of you are open to spreading the love around, just for a short time. We are collecting for only one more month, so your favorite shop/organization can still be supported the rest of the year!

Thank you for considering us! Last year, with the help of the community, we were able to raise around $7000, which went directly to overhead such as rent, utilities and teacher salaries. It may not seem like much to some, but it makes all the difference to us!

Sending you gratitude for all you do for your community. All organizations on this site could not operate without your generosity!

Donation of Items for Fundraiser Garage Sale

See all wishes from Running River School

Description

Hello Sedona Community of Givers!

It's that time of year again when Running River School starts collecting for our annual garage sale fundraiser. We are seeking any type of typical garage sale item in good condition through the end of May. Here's the best part, WE PICK UP! You don't even have to leave home to get it to us!

We do realize that most people have a favorite thrift shop they support, but we are hoping some of you are open to spreading the love around, just for a short time. It is only a coupe of months that we collect, so your favorite shop can still be supported the rest of the year!

SNAP Appointment Setting Volunteer

See all wishes from

nopic

Description

At the Yavapai Food Council we offer assistance with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) application. SNAP was formerly known as Food Stamps. The program allows local individuals in the Verde Valley and within the county to receive assistance applying for necessary benefits for themselves and their families. Our program breaks down barriers to applying for benefits including: transportation difficulties, lack of necessary technological equipment, and confusion over eligibility standards.

Currently we are working on increasing our visibility within the Verde Valley. However, our small staff is having difficulty reaching the clients who could use our services. In order to reach these clients we are looking for volunteers who would be willing to go out into the community once a month for 2 hours to set up appointments in our office or satellite location.

Volunteers should have a patient communication style, reliable transportation, as well as be comfortable speaking with diverse populations. Volunteers who are bilingual or have prior SNAP knowledge are preferred but not required.

Please contact SNAP Program Coordinator, Ariel Thomas-Urlik, at (928) 254-8159 or at snapcoordinator@yavapaifoodcouncil.org for more information.

Vehicle for Kelsea

See all wishes from

Description

Kelsea is a 16-year old local Verde Valley girl that suffers from Cystic Fibrosis. This disease is a chronic lung disease that causes other complications in the body as it progresses. Kelsea is now an insulin diabetic and has recently been diagnosed with end stage liver disease. A liver transplant will be in her near future. The family endures heavy medical bills and expenses related to traveling to and from Phoenix and the Children’s L.A. transplant center in California.

Although she will always live with this chronic disease she is eager to live for the moment and does so by working hard and hoping to attend college someday. She is carrying an extra load in high school in an attempt to graduate early. She also works part time and needs a reliable car to transport her to and fro’. Her working family of four share 2 cars which is logistically challenging. Her brother is also college bound and the strain of helping both children realize their ambition is a financial burden for Kelsea's parents and thus weighs heavily on this ambitious young lady.

Kelsea knows how to persevere through pain and hospitalization and does so without complaining or blaming. “My parents are the most wonderful people in the world and we love each other to death but I always feel like I’m a burden to them.” At this time a reliable vehicle to get her to and from work would help her feel better about that. And Kelsea deserves to feel better.

If you wish to see a picture of Kelsea you may do so by visiting the FRAANK website (www.fraank.org) and clicking on the Beneficiaries tab. The FRAANK organization has generously donated $1000 to help Kelsea buy a car. But its president and founder Romano Scaturro has expressed his concern that $1000 might not be enough to buy Kelsea a decent reliable car.

Rubbermaid Bins/Adult Clothing

See all wishes from

Description

We had an instance once at our sister Susan J. Rheem Center when the participants went fishing at Lynx Lake, got caught in the first monsoon of the season, and got drenched! Having a change of clothes on hand is a good thing! Many of the adults who come to the Center bring personal items for "just in case", such as a change of clothes, adult briefs, etc. Bins need to have a lid, and preferred size is shoebox. If you have clothing for men or women, we could use some of that as well. Men's or Women's dress or sweat pants are most needed. Contact Shelley Fields at 928.649.0788

Scholarship Funds for Outings

See all wishes from

Description

Our participants love all of the activities and meals here at the Susan J. Rheem Adult Day Center, but they also love going on our weekly outings. We schedule a variety of outings each month. A couple are free, but our participants love going to museums and restaurants, as well. Not all of our participants or their families have the means to go on these outings, so we are trying to build a scholarship fund specifically for these special times. Pulse Oximeter/Nerf Basketball

See all wishes from

Description

Yes, these needs are extremely diverse! These two needs exemplify our daily life here at the Susan J. Rheem Adult Day Center. We are a medical day center where the participants are overseen by a nurse, medications are given as needed, and each participant has a individualized plan of care. Once a month the nurse takes the vitals on each participant in order to track their basic health and report changes to their physician as warranted. To that end, our pulse oximeter, donated by the Sedona Sunrise Center when we transitioned here to Cottonwood, is on the blink. If you can donate this item, found at your local pharmacy, it would be used often and greatly appreciated! The other item we need is a nerf basketball hoop/ball. We have younger participants that enjoy active games, and this game is missing from our repertoire. Participants often come to our Center because their caregivers need respite time, but they come back because they have fun! Please call Shelley Fields at 928.649.0788 or come to 636 N. Main St. in Cottonwood to drop off your donation and tour our Center Monday through Friday 8-4.

Felt Board for Spanish Lessons

See all wishes from Running River School

Description

Hello Sedona Wish List Followers!

Our little ones are beginning their Spanish language journey this year, and are absolutely loving it! One item we are missing is a felt board for interactive activities. Our teacher will be making the pieces specific to each language project, but something to put them on would be most helpful! Handmade would also be fine. Maybe you have one lying around from when your kiddos were younger?

Muchas gracias!

You can contact Lupita at 928-301-3232 for pick up arrangements.

Are you a good conversationalist? Are you creative with crafts, music, gardening, or another hobby? Or are do you simply have a compassionate heart, great smile, and time to spend with our participants? Our Susan J. Rheem Adult Day Center could use you! Our day begins at 8, but most participants arrive via our transportation by 9:30. After breakfast, we do a variety of activities until lunch, then have another segment of activities before snack time. These two segments before and after lunch are when our need is greatest. If you are good with groups, you could help a small group do a craft or woodworking project. If you prefer to help one on one, you could play chess, checkers, or similar games with those who also are preferring to do something apart from the main group. Please contact Shelley Fields at 928.649.0788 to sign up!

Kitchen Aide Mixer and/or Electric Burner

See all wishes from

Description

Our chef cooks amazing food for our participants breakfast, lunch, and snack. Everything is made right here in our kitchen. When we first opened in March, we had received many items from the Sedona Sunrise Center. However, we are still in need of some items, as our Center is serving more and more clients every day! We need a Kitchen Aid mixer, preferably a commercial size (though we will happily take a standard home one as well), and an electric burner. Twice a month our chef performs a demonstration for our participants in an activity room, and the burner would help the entire group gathered around to see the action, rather than trying to view the stove from a back seat.

Thank you for supporting our wonderful participants and their families! We provide a welcome respite for caregivers, and these items will continue to ensure special programming for each individual involved. Please contact Shelley Fields at 928.649.0788.

Gymnastics Supplies

See all wishes from Running River School

Description

Our little ones have started their gymnastics program and are loving it! We are still in need of a few items:

1. Bonded Foam Gymnastics Mat - 4' x 8' x 2" ($145)
2. Standard Folding Incline Mat 72"x30"x12" ($250)
3. Supplies for Aerial Silk intsruction: $90

Let's get these kids moving their bodies! Aside from the fun, did you know ....

- Kids who exercise are more likely to keep exercising as an adult.
- Exercise helps kids achieve and maintain a healthy body weight.
- Regular physical activity helps build and maintain strong, healthy muscles, bones and joints.
- Exercise aids in the development of important interpersonal skills—this is especially true for participation in team sports.
- Exercise improves the quantity and quality of sleep.
- Research shows that exercise promotes improved school attendance and enhances academic performance.
- Kids who exercise have greater self-esteem and better self-images.
- Participating in regular physical activity prevents or delays the development of many chronic diseases (e.g., heart disease, diabetes, obesity, hypertension) and promotes health.
- Children who are active report fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression and a better overall mood.
- Exercise helps improve motor coordination and enhances the development of various motor performance skills.

Items for Gymnastics Class

See all wishes from Running River School

Description

Running River School has hired an amazing assistant for our upcoming school year who has extensive training in gymnastics and the circus arts. We want to utilize her skills to enhance our "whole body" curriculum (head, heart and hands). We are in need of a few items to use for instruction.

1. Small exercise-type trampoline in great condition
2. Portable folding gym mat like this: http://www.orbring.com/products/bonded-foam-gymnastics-mat-4-x-8-x-2-blue-red.html
3. Incline mat like this: http://www.orbring.com/products/standard-folding-incline-mat-72x30x12.html
4. $90 to buy the supplies needed for "aerial silks"

You may sometimes ask yourself why a private school needs funding. I have the answer for you! Did you know that the vast majority of small private schools across the country hardly ever can cover their costs by tuition alone? This is also the case for us!

Your next question might be, why do private schools operate this way? The answer to this one, is also very simple. If we were to charge a tuition that would guarantee covering all costs nobody could afford to go! Our reasonable tuition was set in the hopes of making our alternative educational choice available to as many as possible. We also have one of the lowest tuition costs in the country for what we are offering. Which, in turn, requires us to reach out to the community for donations and support for our fundraising efforts. Thank you for considering us!

Quilt

Description

Our building was originally built as the Cottonwood bowling alley. We have lots of wonderful rooms and spaces, but they are all still BIG. We have artwork and plants, but these large activity rooms can still be very echo-y. We would love to have some quilts donated to us that we can hang, with plaques recognizing the quilter, in these large rooms to absorb sound and help our participants feel even more at home. Please contact Shelley at 928.679.0788 to arrange drop-off or to meet our bus in Sedona.
