“To build community support for meeting the needs of the hungry through education and resource development. To increase the production and distribution of locally grown healthy food;
And to be a voice for the hungry.” The Council envisions Verde Valley communities where “There is no more hunger; we treat our hungry neighbors with respect; healthy, fresh food is grown and shared; and self-sufficiency is realized by all.”
BACK PACK FOR KIDS is a Verde Valley-wide program operating in a collaborative effort with schools in the Beaver Creek School District, Cottonwood -- Oak Creek School District, and the Clarkdale-Jerome School District, working with the Central Arizona Food Bank as a response to an identified need – children lacking adequate food during weekends. Participating youth pick up a backpack filled with food each Friday and return it empty the following week. Each backpack will contain enough food for the children in their family and will cost $2.00 per child. Estimated cost for the current school year is $10,000. This will provide backpacks and food for 150 youth for 30 weeks and will serve a total of 450 youth.

SCHOOL GARDEN PROJECT Is a program in partnership with Gardens for Humanity and a critical component to our school outreach program targeted at bringing school gardens, coupled with an age-appropriate integrative gardening curriculum, to schools in the Verde Valley. West Sedona School, an elementary and middle school in Sedona, has been selected this year as a pilot program which is now underway for the Fall 2010 semester. Principal Lisa Hirsch has approved this integrative, holistic curriculum, bringing gardening/agroscience into every subject area. This strategy offers a new learning laboratory for students by integrating book learning with hands-on learning in the garden.
While incorporating state and federal learning standards, this strategy offers a practical approach to education that cultivates self-confidence, self-sufficiency and teamwork in students.
A team from Gardens for Humanity has worked diligently with Lisa Hirsch and a team of teachers at West Sedona School to create this curriculum, giving teachers buy-in, motivation and inspiration for activating this teaching model. In addition, we are collaborating with the Yavapai County Master Gardeners Association to ensure that each school garden is supervised by a certified master gardener.

OTHER PARTNERING PROJECTS FOR YAVAPAI FOOD COUNCIL:
* Started a volunteer recruitment and training program through Yavapai College’s OLLI program for emergency food providers;
* Measured tonnage of food delivered by St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance to Bread of Life Mission and its distribution to local providers;
* Increased tonnage of food supplied by St. Mary’s;
* Assisted Lighthouse Mission in obtaining facilities in Cornville for the Cornville Food Bank;
* Assisted food providers in Sedona in exploring options for sharing facilities and services;
* Promotes enrollment of food volunteers in the Feeding the Generations TimeBank;
* Expanded delivery of food to homebound persons throughout the region through Verde Valley Caregivers Coalition;

SNAP Appointment Setting Volunteer

See all wishes from Yavapai Food Council

nopic

Description

At the Yavapai Food Council we offer assistance with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) application. SNAP was formerly known as Food Stamps. The program allows local individuals in the Verde Valley and within the county to receive assistance applying for necessary benefits for themselves and their families. Our program breaks down barriers to applying for benefits including: transportation difficulties, lack of necessary technological equipment, and confusion over eligibility standards.

Currently we are working on increasing our visibility within the Verde Valley. However, our small staff is having difficulty reaching the clients who could use our services. In order to reach these clients we are looking for volunteers who would be willing to go out into the community once a month for 2 hours to set up appointments in our office or satellite location.

Volunteers should have a patient communication style, reliable transportation, as well as be comfortable speaking with diverse populations. Volunteers who are bilingual or have prior SNAP knowledge are preferred but not required.

Please contact SNAP Program Coordinator, Ariel Thomas-Urlik, at (928) 254-8159 or at snapcoordinator@yavapaifoodcouncil.org for more information.

BACKPACKS nEEDED!

See all wishes from Yavapai Food Council

Description

BACKPACKS Needed for West Sedona School Backpack program - This fall, Yavapai Food Council, Sedona Community Food Bank, YMCA, Christ Lutheran Church, Jewish Community of Sedona & the Verde Valley, and United Methodist Church will be expanding the Weekend Backpacks for Kids program at West Sedona School to reach all student qualifying for free or reduced meals. Over the last 5 years, the program has provided much needed weekend food for 20 to 30 students each week. A recent study by Harvey Grady with Cornucopia Community Advocates titled Free/Reduced Cost School Meals in Yavapai County - 2013 identified 62.6% of the students a West Sedona (265) now qualify for government subsidized free or reduced meals. In an effort to reach as many of the students that qualifying as possible, this program will now be open to all 265 with parent approval. A letter will sent home with the students early in the school year asking that parents return the letter by the deadline if they would like their child to receive free or reduced meals. Although the school is limited to the number of backpacks that can be distributed on site because of space and resources, the remaining backpacks will be available on distribution day across the street at the Sedona YMCA.

We currently have 30 backpacks available for this program and ask the community to consider donating new or gently used full-size backpacks for the expansion of this program. We anticipate needing an additional 125 or more backpacks at the beginning of the year. Your contribution of backpacks will ensure that Yavapai Food Council funding is used to supplement food purchases, rather than backpacks. A cash donation of $1,500 ear-marked for the West Sedona Backpack program would also allow Yavapai Food Council to purchase 200 quality backpacks through a wholesale distributor at cost.

For additional information on this an other local hunger programs, please email Amy Aossey (Executive Director) at: Amy@YavapaiFoodCouncil.org or call 928-254-8172

Studio Apartment, Guest House, etc. for 501C-3

See all wishes from Yavapai Food Council

Description

Do you have a studio apartment, guest house or similar accommodations that you could offer Yavapai Food Council (501c3) at a Reduced Rate?

Yavapai Food Council is excited to announce the addition of a 2014-15 AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer service member from Santa Rosa CA. An AmeriCorps VISTA member is dedicated to volunteering for an organization over a 1 year term for a compensation plan that includes a minimal housing stipend and education stipend available at the end of their term. By design, this program places service oriented individuals with a minimum of a BA degree in a lifestyle comparable to poverty level to encourage the empathy and understanding of the service. Our new VISTA member will arrive in Sedona mid-August. Without the dedication of this volunteer member, YFC would not have the resources available to build a team capable of accomplishing the goals set to reduce hunger and provide outreach to our communities. We are a small organization doing very big things and the upcoming year is no different!

We are asking those in the community who may have a guest house, studio apartment or similar accommodations in the Sedona/VOC area to consider supporting Yavapai Food Council, our new VISTA Member and our efforts toward reducing hunger by providing an accommodations at a reduced monthly rate. Our new member is dedicated to serving the community, focused on her path toward graduate school and committed to make a difference as a member of Yavapai Food Council.

If you or someone you know has the ability to fulfill this wish, please contact Yavapai Food Council's Executive Director, Amy Aossey at Amy@YavapaiFoodCouncil.org or by phone at 928-593-0755.
